Solar Eclipse Viewing

Solar Eclipse Viewing

Please join us on Monday, August 21, 2017 for a viewing party at Winter Springs High School starting in RM-6-214 after school.  Don’t forget to bring your NASA-approved eclipse glasses. NOTE:  Mrs. Nikles will have glasses for students to use for 10-minutes at a time.  Remember, It is not safe to look directly at the sun, you could cause permanent damage to your eyes.

Any student planning on attending the viewing party is required to have a signed parent permission form and use approved viewing glasses. Forms may be picked up in Ms. Nikles room 6-214. You may also print the form at:

Forms must be returned to Ms. Nikles by Monday, August 21, 2017 in order to participate.

On Monday, August 21st, 2017, all of North America will experience an eclipse of the sun. According to NASA, anyone within the “path of totality” will be able to see a total solar eclipse.  This path, where the moon will completely cover the sun will stretch from Lincoln Beach, Oregon to Charleston, South Carolina.  Central Florida is outside this path, but will still see a partial solar eclipse where the moon covers part of the sun’s disk.  The partial solar eclipse will begin at 1:26 p.m. and last until 4:20 p.m. with a maximum coverage being reached at 2:51 p.m.

Looking directly at the sun when it is partially covered by the moon can cause serious eye damage or blindness.  It is dangerous to look at a partial solar eclipse without proper eye protection.  Only devices recognized by NASA and AAS with a solar filter, such as “eclipse glasses,” can be used to safely watch the eclipse.  Homemade devices should not be used to view the eclipse.
