Attendance Notes

WSHS Attendance Procedure
Posted on 10/02/2025

For the 25-26 school year, our district has implemented a new process for reporting student absences. Absence requests can now be submitted through Skyward Family Access Portal. You will choose from a drop-down menu of absence reasons which will be reviewed to determine if it meets the board policy approved “excused” absence. If you submit on Skyward, you do not need to send an email unless you are attaching needed documents. Medical and doctor’s notes, court documents, or religious instruction will still need to be provided for documentation along with the absence request. If your family does not have internet access, paper notes are still acceptable in this situation.

Parents can excuse up to 10 days of absences for approved reasons

for the entire school year. Notes/documentation must be turned in within 7 days from the date student returns to school from absence(s).

What counts as an “excused” absence?
After you submit the absence request, school staff will review it to ensure it meets the board policy for an excused absence. Here are the most common reasons that may be excused:

•Your child is sick (Illness that lasts longer than 5 consecutive days may require a doctor’s note)
•Doctor or medical appointments
•Required court appearances
•Death in the immediate family
•Religious holidays or instruction
•Approved school activities or events
•Therapy appointments (speech, occupational, ABA, etc.)
•Attendance at a DCF-supervised program
•Significant community events (with principal’s prior approval)
•Other special situations approved by the principal
•Insurmountable conditions, like extreme weather or public health concerns
Each absence request will be reviewed in accordance with School Board Policy 5200.

We believe that regular school attendance is key to your child's success in high school. Consistent participation in class not only helps students stay on track with their learning goals but also contributes to their overall academic achievement.

Your support in encouraging timely attendance plays a vital role in ensuring that our students reach their full potential. We truly appreciate your partnership in prioritizing your child’s education and helping them succeed!

Thank you for your continued commitment to their success.
